Challenge Accepted

Every winter, Sunday River hosts the Bud Light Local’s Challenge—a race league for less-than-serious athletes who take these races very seriously. And from now until January, you and six of your friends have the opportunity to sign up so you can suit up and race this season.

So, how does this beer league work?

For 10 Wednesdays during the season, you’ll show up to ski or ride between 9AM and noon. You’ll take two runs on a dual Giant Slalom course, careening (safely) around expertly set gates to score points for your team. But don’t worry if you’re not the fastest guy or gal on the hill. Bracket scoring levels the playing field between the ex-race stars and the newbies alike. The results are separated into men’s and women’s, then broken into groups of 10. The fastest racer of that 10-person group will receive 20 points, while the slowest racer scores 11. If five or more members of your team show up to race, you’ll be awarded 5 points automatically.

The fun doesn’t stop once you click out of your bindings. A weekly Wednesday results party is held at a nearby eatery (including a bunch of Best of Bethel award winners) from 5:30-7PM with free food and a Bud Light special for Local’s Challenge racers. Your name will be put into a drawing for tons of free swag, and you’ll find out how fast (or slow) you tackled the course, plus your team’s ranking for the week and the season. The team with the most points at the end of the season will win the coveted Golden Boot, plus an extra-fun prize.

To sign up, all you have to do is gather six of your friends, come up with a witty team name, collect $40 from each teammate, and have the team captain deliver everyone’s paperwork and money to Meryl Kelly at the Barker Competition Center. Then you’ll show up for the Bib Toss party at Barker Bar on January 4 to collect your bib and celebrate the start of the season. Races begin on January 11, 2017.

Racer’s ready? 3, 2, 1. Go.
